Self-Love Scroll

2021-22

Part of the HOOKED season at Science Gallery Atlanta

Artist with Marcus Brittian Fleming

Self-Love Scroll 2022, Marcus Brittian Fleming

An online workshop series and research experiment made with psychotherapist, artist, and Bandwidth Care founder Marcus Brittian Fleming (New York) and 18-25 year olds in the Atlanta area.

We’ve all been there, lying on our backs, necks craned, our phones hovering over us, scrolling endlessly. It’s as if scrolling through the “feed” might be changing how we use our bodies, engage with our feelings, and develop our identities. These feeds are designed to narrow our focus, keeping us fixed on the screen as we consume more.

Self-love Scroll was a series of workshops designed to explore how being more connected to the body might help us think differently about our relationship with social media. The goal: to unstick from the screen so we can develop a more critical understanding of the design techniques that reel us into our smartphones.

The workshops used movement, medication-like exercises and poetry to defamiliarise participant’s relationships to Zoom and other online platforms, framing creativity and weirdness as spaces of resistance.

I live and work on Bidjigal and Gadigal land. I pay my respects to custodians past, present and emerging by revering the land and paying the rent. Always was, always will be.
